President's Message by Kevin Clingan

As we move into a new year, the home building industry is moving forward at bullet speed with new products and technologies that, just a few years ago, would only have been seen on “The Jetsons.” On the other side, at no other time has the industry faced more challenges, ranging from increasingly demanding regulations to soaring costs due to the Chinese economic boom and the failure of supply to keep up with demand.

At this time, the reason for the HBA’s existence is clear; it is our job to protect and promote the American dream of home ownership. The HBA has a great relationship with local officials, working together to promote safety and the overall quality of the home. We are working with these representatives to ensure the passage of laws which would promote our industry at a cost that we can justify.

It is this understanding of the industry and where it is headed that separates HBA builders and remodelers from the rest. HBA builders and remodelers are held to a higher standard by stringent requirements for membership, such as proof of workers’ compensation and general liability insurance.

It is my hope that if you are considering building or remodeling this year, you will consider what an HBA member can provide. Building and remodeling should be enjoyable processes – and with an HBA builder or remodeler providing a high level of professionalism, it will be.

The HBA has three major events which showcase our homes and our members’ products and services. First, in January our Home Show, held at the downtown Expo Center, allows the public to meet builders, remodelers and suppliers as well as discuss trends and products with subcontractors and suppliers. This is a great way to obtain the necessary information and start planning for your new home or remodeling project. In June, our Parade of Homes showcases superior homes built by our members in all price ranges. Finally, in October, our Home Remodeling EXPO at the E*Plex offers remodeling professionals with real experience and ethical business practices who can help you with everything from small repairs to major additions.

The HBA is successful in its mission because of all our members who not only help us by providing quality products, but also by offering expert insights. Their tireless efforts volunteering and supporting our industry are a crucial part of our success. A special thanks to these individuals and companies.

We have a great year ahead of us, and I look forward to working together.
